The Remutaka Rail Trail
This is one of the most rewarding day rides! Part of the Ngā Haerunga New Zealand Cycle Trail network, the Remutaka Rail Trail follows part of the old railway line built in the 1870’s to connect Wellington with the Wairarapa.
The trail passes through the once bustling railway settlements of Summit and Cross Creek stations where steam trains once clung to the mountainside. Today it is wide gravel rides, big skies, regenerating bush with expansive country views.
Your Ride. Your Way.
Approximately 40 minutes from Wellington, we start the ride from Maymorn Station (Upper Hutt Side), 7km earlier than the more traditional starting point of Kaitoke, but we offer flexible ride options:
- Maymorn to Cross Creek – 25km on way / 50km return
- Kaitoke to Cross Creek – 18km one way / 36km return
Choose a one-way ride with a collection at Cross Creek (Wairarapa side), a return to Wellington, or continue onto wine country and the charming village of Martinborough for a late winery lunch or wine tasting.
Adventure, followed by indulgence. Very Walkington.
The Journey
With premium bikes (or e-bikes), helmets, torches and a beautiful packed lunch provided, you set off through the lush Pākuratahi forest, following the Pākuratahi river as it winds gently through the valley.
The initial incline towards Kaitoke is steady but never punishing, even on a traditional bike. In fact, you’ll quietly appreciate the gradual climb when it becomes your effortless downhill return!
At Kaitoke, there is time for a quick comfort stop before the climb towards the summit begins in earnest. The gravelled trail is wide and forgiving, and the ascent unfolds gradually. The expansive views toward the Wairarapa open up as you rise and the promise of summit snacks keeps spirits high.
The Summit and Tunnel
At the summit, pause and refuel and strap that head torch on, as you are about to ride through one of the longest tunnels – the Siberia Gully Tunnel – one of the trail highlights. It is long, cool and vey dark! After emerging into the sunlight, your next treat is crossing the classic kiwi swing bridge – and then the real downhill begins.
Approximately seven glorious kilometres of riding through the Wairarapa open countryside. Wide skies, rolling hills and the kind of free wheeling descent that makes you smile!
Pass through the historic remains of Cross Creek Station – an ideal lunch stop, with facilities available and a wide open space to relax.
The Perfect Finish
For those heading onwards into wine country or elsewhere, continue on the final 2km to Cross Creek car park where your transfer awaits or make this your half way turn around point!
Yes, it is a steady grind back up to the Summit (unless you’re on an e-bike, in which case you’ll feel slightly smug), but its achievable for even fair weather riders. And once you crest that summit again – it’s almost entirely downhill all the way home!
